Miyakojima Miyakojima

Miyakojima, one of the Sakishima Islands, is an isle in the Pacific Ocean approximately 300 km southwest of Okinawa Island. There are seven other islands among the Miyako Islands: Ikema, Kurima, Irabu, Shimoji, Ogami, Tarama and Minna. Bridges allowing cars to cross connect only to Ikema and Kurima.

The beautiful white sand beaches and ocean make this area perfect as a beach resort, where you can enjoy a view from the beach while taking a drive or a stroll. The surrounding ocean is some of the best in Okinawa Prefecture and contains the best coral reefs in Japan. Yabishi is particularly popular for snorkeling and diving. Shioyuki, or "snow salt", is made from the Guiness World Record ocean water around the island that has the highest mineral content in the world. This Miyakojima specialty has spread and is used far beyond the island. In addition, the entire island is thrown into a frenzy during the National Triathlon Miyakojima Competition in which 1,500 athletes compete in a 3k swim, a 155k bicycle race and a 42.195k marathon.
